Jury Finds Orange County Woman Who Drowned Infant Was Sane

SANTA ANA (AP) — A jury says an Orange County woman was legally sane when she drowned her baby in a bathtub.

Monday's ruling means that 30-year-old Lucero Carrera faces 25 years to life in prison when she's sentenced next month.

She'd have been committed to a mental hospital if jurors had found she didn't know right from wrong during the crime.

Lucero, who was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, drowned 2-month-old Kimberly Gutierrez at a Santa Ana trailer park in June of 2012. Her attorney says she also tried to kill herself with a pill overdose.

Carrera was convicted last month of first-degree murder.
