Judge Tosses Suit Brought By Tennis Referee Cleared Of Murder
LOS ANGELES (AP) — A judge has thrown out a lawsuit against Los Angeles police and the county coroner filed by a tennis referee who was cleared of accusations that she beat her husband to death with a coffee mug.
City News Service reports Friday that the district court judge ruled that 72-year-old Lois Goodman provided insufficient evidence to prove false arrest and malicious prosecution.
Robert Sheahen, one of Goodman's attorneys, says he would appeal the ruling.
Goodman was arrested by Los Angeles police at the 2012 U.S. Open in New York as she arrived to work as a line judge.
Authorities charged her with bludgeoning her 80-year-old husband with a coffee cup in April 2012. The charges were later dropped.
The lawsuit says Goodman incurred more than $100,000 in legal expenses from the arrest.
