Jet Skier Dies After Massive Ocean Search, Rescue Off Long Beach

LONG BEACH (CBSLA) — A jet skier who was rescued after a massive ocean search has died.

The U.S. Coast Guard confirmed the death of 20-year-old Jean Carlos Cheryl late Sunday night. Several helicopters and boats had been dispatched to search for him after he was reported missing at 10:48 a.m.

Cheryl had been part of a group of jet skiers headed from Long Beach to Catalina Island when he went missing.

His red and white jet ski was found first at about 2 p.m. Cheryl was found at about 7:50 p.m. about eight nautical miles southeast of the Long Beach Lighthouse and taken via hospital to Long Beach Airport.

From the airport, firefighters took him to Long Beach Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Information about Cheryl's cause of death was not released.
