Irvine Man Charged In Fatal Rollover Collision

SANTA ANA (CBSLA.com) — A 27-year-old man was charged Thursday for killing a passenger by losing control of his vehicle in a rollover crash.

According to the Orange County District Attorney's Office, Colin Michael Selsted, of Irvine, was charged with one felony count each of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence while intoxicated, driving under the influence of alcohol causing bodily injury, and driving with a blood alcohol concentration of .08 percent or more causing bodily injury.

Selsted also faces sentencing enhancement allegations for driving with a blood alcohol level of .15 percent or more, and inflicting great bodily injury.

Around 3:00 p.m. on Monday, Selsted allegedly drank alcohol at a restaurant with a group of friends before traveling to a friend's home, where they continued to drink.

Selsted drove his Volkswagen Golf GTI around 10:55 p.m. from the home with 23-year-old Devon W., who traveled in the passenger seat.

Police explained he lost control of the vehicle, which spun out on Shady Canyon Drive, just east of Cloverfield, and rolled over multiple times down a hill and struck a concrete block wall.

A resident nearby reportedly called 911 after the vehicle came to a stop.

Once on scene, paramedics extracted and transported Selsted and the female victim to Western Medical Center.

Officials explained the victim suffered from a severe skull fracture as a result of the crash, and was pronounced brain dead prior to succumbing to her injuries.

About two hours after the crash occurred, Selsted is accused of having a blood alcohol content level of .17 percent, officers explained.

If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in state prison.

Selsted is currently being held on $100,000, and is expected to appear back in court on Feb. 20 in Newport Beach.
