Innocent Pedestrian, Dog Struck And Killed By Pursuit Suspect During Long Beach Chase
LONG BEACH (CBSLA) – A Long Beach burglary suspect has been arrested on manslaughter charges after he allegedly struck and killed a man and his dog during a high-speed police pursuit late Tuesday night.
Another six men were arrested in the burglary, which occurred at a marijuana business.
The incident began at 11:10 p.m. when officers responded to a burglary call at a marijuana business in the 2100 block of Gaylord Avenue, Long Beach police report. The 911 caller told a dispatcher the suspects were inside cutting marijuana plants.
As officers arrived on scene, one of the suspects fled in Mercedes Benz, with officers giving chase.
During the high-speed pursuit, the suspect ran a red light at Magnolia Avenue and 6th Street and slammed into a man who was walking his dog. The collision was caught on surveillance video.
The man and his dog died at the scene. He was later identified as 32-year-old Jose Hernandez.
The suspect, didn't slow down, but continued until he slammed into a fence at Locust Avenue and 6th Street, where he was arrested.
26-year-old Jyvante West from the Northern California city of Richmond was booked on gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, hit and run resulting in death, driving under the influence of drugs causing injury, evading a police officer, commercial burglary and conspiracy to commit a crime.
Another six Northern California men were also taken into custody on burglary charges, police said, but none of them were involved in the chase.
