Idaho State Police Honoring 4 Who Spotted Kidnapped SD-Area Teen
MERIDIAN, Idaho (CBSLA.com) — Authorities in Idaho are honoring four citizens who spotted kidnap victim Hannah Anderson and her alleged captor in the wilderness last August.
Idaho State Police said in a blog post that former Gem County Sheriff Mark John, his wife Christa, and their companions, Mike and Mary Young, will be honored at a Friday afternoon ceremony in Meridian, Idaho.
The four were horseback riding when they encountered Hannah, and murder suspect, James Lee DiMaggio. When they returned home, they saw an Amber Alert broadcast, and reported the sighting.
"That phone call triggered a response of over one hundred county, state and federal law enforcement officers to converge and conduct an extensive manhunt in the rugged Idaho mountain wilderness," police said in the blog post.
DiMaggio was killed in a shootout with FBI agents on Aug. 10, according to KNX 1070's Tom Reoppelle.
The 40-year-old was also suspected in the killings of Hannah's mother, and her 8-year-old brother.
Reoppelle reports that the four horseback riders and Hannah have kept in touch since.
