Humpback Whale Entangled In Net Near Rancho Palos Verdes

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — A humpback whale has been entangled in a net just off the coast of Rancho Palos Verdes.

Rescue boats were out to attempt to help the whale get untangled from the net on Saturday, but the whale was too agitated for rescue personnel to get close enough.

The whale continued to breach the water and slapping it's flippers repeatedly.

The rescue effort had to be called off until Sunday when the sun went down.

"It's heartbreaking when we come across a whale who's suffering," Captain Dan Salas of Harbor Breeze Cruises said.

About a week ago, a fin whale was entangled near Dana Point, and in September, a blue whale was caught in a buoy line near San Pedro.

Rescue groups were not able to put a tracking device on the whale, but they will be out on the water early Sunday morning to try and spot it.

The whale was last seen traveling North up the coast.

Authorities are asking any boaters who see the entangled whale on Sunday morning to notify the Coast Guard.
