Human skeletal remains found near Palm Springs gorge

Authorities have launched an investigation into the discovery of human skeletal remains that were discovered near a gorge in Palm Springs last week. 

The bones were found at around 6:30 p.m. on Friday, at which point Palm Springs Police Department officers were dispatched to the area located near Southridge Drive and the Araby Trail, according to a statement from the department. 

There was no information on the person's identity yet available. 

The remains were picked up by the Riverside County Coroner's Officer for further investigation into the identity as well as a potential cause of death and how long the remains have been in the gorge, police said. 

No further information was provided.
