Horse Killed, Rider Injured After Being Struck By Car In Yucaipa

YUCAIPA (CBSLA.com) — Authorities on Monday said a horse was killed and its rider injured after being struck by a vehicle in the San Bernardino County.

The accident in the 36700 block of Oak Glen Road in Yucaipa happened about 11:06 a.m., the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department said in a written statement.

When deputies arrived, they located the deceased horse and its rider lying along a dirt embankment.

The rider, identified as Dorothy Potter, 72, of Yucaipa, had sustained injuries to her lower torso and legs, authorities said.

She was taken to a hospital for treatment. Her condition was not known.

The driver of the vehicle, identified by authorities as Manuel Montoya, 49, of Victorville, was uninjured.

Authorities said deputies determined that Potter was riding her horse when, for reasons unknown, it suddenly began running toward Oak Glen Road and was struck by a truck that was traveling about 40 mph.

"[Montoya] noticed Potter and her horse running toward the roadway and tried to avoid colliding with them by turning away from their approach," the statement added.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation, authorities said.
