Homicide Detectives Investigate Deadly Deputy-Involved Shooting In South LA

SOUTH LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Homicide detectives investigated a deadly deputy-involved shooting Tuesday that took place in South Los Angeles.

Shortly before midnight on Monday, a suspect believed to have been driving under the influence led deputies on a pursuit, which ended in the 400 block of West 111th Street, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

A woman who traveled with the suspect jumped out of the vehicle screaming.

The suspect then turned his car around and drove straight at deputies.

In fear, one of two deputies fired at the suspect vehicle.

"When the vehicle came towards them, he was concerned he was going to be sandwiched in and crushed by the door," explained Lt. Victor Lewandowski.

Upon their arrival, authorities pronounced the 40-year-old suspect dead at the scene. His identity is being withheld pending family notification.

Authorities said a deputy sustained injuries to his leg and wrist.

The woman was detained for questioning and has since been released.

At this time, it remains unclear if the suspect was armed.

West 111th Street will remain closed until further notice.

The investigation is ongoing.
