Homicide Detectives Investigate Deputy-Involved Shooting In Compton

COMPTON (CBSLA.com) — Homicide detectives investigated the circumstances surrounding a deputy-involved shooting Tuesday that took place in Compton.

According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, the shooting occurred just before 10 p.m. on Monday in the 15800 block of South Tarrant Avenue.

Deputies were contacted around 8:30 p.m. by a resident who reported a man had pointed a gun at him earlier in the day. The victim was able to identify the suspect and vehicle that he was driving at the time of the incident.

A short time later, deputies located the suspect -- described as an adult African American man -- sitting in the drivers seat of a white Infiniti parked in the neighborhood.

"The suspect got out of the car holding a pistol," explained Deputy Kelvin Moody. "He ran behind the Infiniti and pointed the pistol at deputies, at which time a deputy-involved shooting occurred."

The suspect then fled from the vehicle on foot. Deputies located him in the front yard of a home during a perimeter search. He was arrested without incident.

Paramedics transported the suspect to a hospital for treatment of a single gunshot wound to his lower torso. An update on his condition remains unknown at this time.

A preliminary investigation revealed the vehicle the suspect drove had been reported stolen to LAPD's Foothill Division in 2015.

Detectives recovered a handgun at the scene.

No deputies were injured during the shooting.

The investigation is ongoing.

Anyone with information about this incident has been urged to contact the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500.
