Hit-And-Run Driver Slams Into Cars, Utility Pole In Garden Grove

GARDEN GROVE (CBSLA.com) — A hit-and-run driver slammed into cars and a utility pole, knocking out power Sunday morning to dozens of Garden Grove residents.

It happened around 2:30 p.m. as the large pick-up truck headed south on West Street near Dunklee Lane, according to Garden Grove police.

The suspect collided head-on with an SUV, which was so mangled that the two young men inside were trapped in the wreckage. Firefighters had to use the Jaws of Life, as they worked below dangling high-voltage power lines, to extricate those passengers. They were transported to the UC Irvine Medical Center in critical condition.

The damage to the utility pole, which was snapped in half, caused a power outage for 50 to 60 homes. SoCal Edison crews worked throughout the morning to stabilize the pole and restore electricity.
