Historic San Gabriel Mission Plans Layoff

SAN GABRIEL (AP) — The historic San Gabriel Mission in Southern California is laying off a longtime employee because of financial hardships — and he may not be the last.

The mission says its spokesman and activities planner, Chuck Lyons, will depart after 12 years.

Lyons was a victim of budget cuts as the mission struggles with a decrease in Sunday donations from the parish.

The mission east of Los Angeles has 20 employees.

Business Manager Al Sanchez tells the San Gabriel Valley Tribune that officials are looking at more positions that could be eliminated.
