Hesperia Parents Arrested In Torture Of Daughter, 4

HESPERIA (CBSLA.com) — A San Bernardino County couple Monday was accused of torturing their 4-year-old girl.

Deputies were sent to Loma Linda University Children's Hospital on July 15 to investigate a case of child cruelty where a little girl had been admitted for ingesting a toxic substance, officials said.

"The victim was found to have multiple non-accidental injuries, to include evidence that she had been tortured," spokesperson Randy Naquin said.

The victim's mother, 29-year-old Jamie Updegraff, and her step-father, Jake Updegraff, 31, were arrested for willful cruelty to a child, failure to provide care to a child, torture, and causing great bodily injury during the commission of a felony.

Both parents, of Hesperia, were being held at the Central Detention Center on $500,000 bail.

The girl remains hospitalized.
