Hermosa Beach Eyes Ban On Trash Scavenging

HERMOSA BEACH (CBSLA.com) — Rummaging through garbage for recyclables in Hermosa Beach could soon be illegal.

City officials are looking into possibly banning trash scavenging, and making it a misdemeanor to do so.

The proposed ban is aimed at keeping Hermosa Beach cleaner and for the city to keep the funds from all the recyclables that end up in trash cans, especially in the Pier area.

Scavenging "removes available recycling funds from the city and is not consistent with the intent of the California Redemption Value (CRV) program", according to a city staff report.

If the ordinance is approved, officials say they will launch a public education campaign to raise awareness and warn potential violators.
