Gunman Arrested On Suspicion Of Shooting, Injuring West Covina Officer

LA PUENTE (CBSLA.com) — A 47-year-old man was arrested Thursday in connection with the attempted murder of a West Covina police officer.

Just after 2:00 a.m., homicide detectives served a search warrant at a home located in the 1200 block of Foxworth Avenue in La Puente, which resulted in the arrest of Jose Luis Chavez, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

Chavez is accused of shooting Officer Kenny Benitez in his chest on Friday.

Benitez was transported to a hospital for treatment of injuries sustained in the shooting.

At this time, it remains unclear if Chavez was struck by gunfire during the shooting. He will be transported to a hospital for treatment of any possible injuries.

According to deputies, he will be booked on suspicion of attempted murder of a peace officer.

The motive for the shooting remains under investigation.
