According to the Butte County Sheriff's Office, the shooting occurred at 7:35 p.m. inside the bus after it had parked outside an AM/PM store.

In a news conference Thursday morning, the suspect was identified as 21-year-old Asaahdi Elijah Coleman of Sacramento.

Butte County authorities said Coleman boarded the bus in Redding, then became agitated after a stop in Chico.

"At one point, there was some discussion about whether or not people were going to Los Angeles, and L.A. being a dangerous place, and that conversation prompted Mr. Coleman to show some of the people on the bus a firearm that he had in a bag or satchel he was carrying," Butte County Sheriff Kory Honea said.

The bus then stopped behind an AM/PM in Oroville, where Coleman opened fire as people were getting off, Honea said.

Deputies responded to find five people aboard the bus with gunshots wounds, including a 25-year-old pregnant woman and an 11-year-old girl, according to CBS Sacramento. One person died at the scene. The deceased victim was not immediately identified.

The four injured victims were airlifted to local hospitals.

Following the shooting, Coleman ran from the scene and entered a nearby Walmart, the sheriff's office said. Deputies found Coleman, who matched the description of the suspect, inside the Walmart and took him into custody.

According to CBS Sacramento, Coleman was wanted out of Alameda County for being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm.
