Granada Hills Students Set Sights On US Title After Calif. Academic Decathlon Win
GRANADA HILLS (CBSLA.com) — Students at a Granada Hills high school were set to celebrate Monday after their school's victory in the California Academic Decathlon.
The win marks somewhat of a return to glory for Granada Hills Charter High School, which previously won the state and national decathlons from 2011-2013.
Decathletes competed in 10 quiz competitions involving speech, interviews, essay, art, economics, language and literature, mathematics, music, social science and a "Super Quiz" about the this year's topic, "Alternatives in Energy: Ingenuity & Innovation", according to officials.
The eight-member team will now go on to pursue a 13th consecutive national title for the state of California at the 34th Annual U.S. Academic Decathlon Competition in April in Garden Grove.
Brian Bauer, the executive director of Granada Hills Charter High School, told KNX 1070 NEWSRADIO he credits the students as well as those who work behind the scenes to support them.
"We think the unique ingredient behind Granada Hills' success is our great teachers and staff who are so committed to every single one of our over 4,000 students," said Bauer.
L.A. Unified schools have dominated the academic decathlon in recent decades, earning 15 national titles since 1986.
