Goodwill's First Upscale Store To Open In L.A. County

REDONDO BEACH (CBSLA.com) — An upscale secondhand store is set to open Friday in Redondo Beach, and it has already created a buzz among shoppers.

Edgar & James: A Curated Collection by Goodwill at 317 Torrance Blvd. is a higher-end and trendy Goodwill store. It is the nonprofit's first-of-its-kind in Los Angeles County.

The name Edgar & James comes from Goodwill's founder, Edgar James Helms.

"We hope they walk in the door, and they'll say: Wow! This is a Goodwill?" said Julie Dover with Goodwill.

The 4,000-square-foot space offers clothes sorted by trends. "You've got the clothing four-way if you will. It might be a junior's Bohemian look. You've got another one that might be a preppy look," Dover said.

Home goods are laid out by style as well in categories like industrial, urban and mid-century modern.

Shoppers will find sought-after collectibles at the store. "You see those items when you go to a home store, and they may be reproductions. Here, it's original," Dover said.

She said customers can expect to pay more than they do at the traditional Goodwill stores, but the stuff at Edgar & James will still be affordable. Think $7.99 instead of 99 cents.
