Supervisor Molina Plans To Run For City Council

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Los Angeles County Supervisor Gloria Molina plans to run for Los Angeles City Council, her press deputy confirmed to CBSLA on Friday.

The Los Angeles Times reported by afternoon that Molina is expected to challenge Jose Huizar in next year's election.

"I was very pleased to learn that Supervisor Gloria Molina will be a candidate for Los Angeles City Council in March," said Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich.

He added, "As one who has worked with her for a number of years, there have been times we have agreed and other times we have disagreed. I have always found her to be an honorable person and she has my full support in her effort to become City Councilwoman in the 14th council district."

Meanwhile, after news surfaced of Molina's plans, Huizar issued the following statement:

"From revitalizing Broadway and helping create thousands of jobs downtown, to building new parks, to championing groundbreaking pedestrian, bike and business friendly policies that are the model for the entire city, the service to Council District 14 constituents has never been higher and I look forward to continuing to serve as their councilmember for the next four years."

Molina's term as supervisor -- a post she has held for over two decades – is set to expire in three months.

According to her website, Molina was the first Latina in history to be elected to the California State Legislature in 1982 and the Los Angeles City Council in 1987.

She was also the first Latina to be elected to the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors in 1991.
