Glendale Hit With 2 Massive Power Outages As Temperatures Hit 90 Degrees

GLENDALE (CBSLA) — A Glendale Water & Power substation failed Wednesday morning, causing multiple power outages around the city that lasted hours.

Glendale Water and Power (GWP) said crews were working on restoring power to all customers. The outage hit most of Glendale, parts of La Crescenta, Echo Park and Eagle Rock. It's unclear exactly how many customers were without power.

The power outage occurred at about 11:15 a.m., just as temperatures hit 90 degrees. Wednesday's forecast high for Glendale is 96 degrees. A little after 1 p.m., power had been restored to the Montrose area. GWP said it could take until 5:30 p.m. for power to be restored to some neighborhoods in the rest of the grid. Crews were working to make repairs on the failed substation.

However, to add insult to injury, Glendale was then hit with a second major outage. In many neighborhoods, power came back and then went out again.

Power eventually came back at around sunset Wednesday. Officials later blamed transformer problems at the same substation was responsible for both outages.
