Girl, 3, Shot In Exposition Park

EXPOSITION PARK (CBSLA.com) —    Authorities said a girl, 3, has been shot in Exposiition Park.

The shooting took place about  4:30 p.m. near Walton Avenue at 39th Street, police said.

A family member took the girl to a street corner to meet an ambulance. The child was taken to the hospital in stable condition.

The girl was originally reported to be about 5 years old.

Relatives told KCAL 9's Jeff Nguyen the little girl  -now identified as Jayleen Dickerson --  was shot in the face during a drive-by shooting.

The suspects reportedly fled in a dark car.

Dana Kennedy was sitting on her porch when she heard several shots .

Before all the shots were fired, Kennedy said she heard the girl's mother screaming.

The mom was yelling, "My baby, my baby, She's been hit. Call the ambulance, call the police."

Authorities said about 15 people were hanging out in front of a home when a gray car pulled up.

Police sad one of the passengers jumped out and fired off several rounds.

One of the bullets pierced a window and found a defenseless Jayleen inside.

Detectives with the LAPD's Gang Unit have been assigned to help out with the investigation.

Neighbor Kennedy says she doesn't know the motive for the shooting but knows Jayleen was not a target.
