Gas Meter Reader Accused Of Fatally Striking Homeowner's Yorkie Has Been Fired

REDLANDS (CBSLA.com) — Southern California Gas says they have fired a gas meter reader who allegedly struck and killed a homeowner's Yorkie in Redlands.

The employee, whose name was not revealed, reportedly was carrying a baton-like L-shaped hook when he struck and killed one of  Cathy Rodriguez's three Yorkies on April 24.

She told KCAL 9 that she witnessed the meter reader strike her 6-pound dog, Bean Bean.

The Humane Society of San Bernardino Valley's Cruelty Investigation Department interviewed Rodriguez and the meter reader about the incident.

"The individual no longer works for the company. Again, the employees of SoCalGas send their condolences to the Rodriguez family for their loss. SoCalGas' meter reading policies and training are designed to avoid situations that can negatively impact the safety of both our meter readers and customers' pets and we are working with the Humane Society to review our procedures," said company spokesperson Anne Silva.

Rodriguez told KCAL9 that the dogs were barking but posed no threat or real harm to the meter reader.

He told her he had been bitten three times previously that day by other dogs and wasn't going to get bitten again.

The Humane Society determined the meter reader didn't maliciously intend to harm Bean Bean.

Rodriguez said she asked the meter reader to wait outside her gate until she could round up the three dogs.

Bean Been died at a local animal hospital from blunt force trauma to the side of the head, said the Humane Society.
