Funeral Services Held For Arcadia Firefighter Who Died On Backpacking Trip

ARCADIA (CBSLA.com) — Funeral services were held Wednesday for the Arcadia firefighter whose body was found after a two-week search in the mountains near Fillmore.

Mike Herdman was remembered at the Arcadia Performing Arts Center at 11 a.m.

The firefighter went missing on June 13 while backpacking with his dog, Duke, and fellow firefighter Taylor Byars, in the rugged terrain.

The 36-year-old reportedly ran off barefoot to chase after Duke, wearing only board shorts and a T-shirt.

Byars searched for his friend for nearly two days before he made his way out of the wilderness and reported his friend missing.

Herdman's body was found on June 27 in the Sepse Wilderness, about 1,200 feet above his campsite.

The 36-year-old's death was ruled accidental, caused by blunt-force injury.

Herdman was a beloved husband, father and seven-year veteran of the Arcadia Fire Department.

Firefighters from San Marino, San Gabriel and South Pasadena raised $17,000 for Herdman's family during a two-hour fundraiser Monday night.
