Fundraising Efforts Underway For Monterey Park Police Dog Stung By Bees
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — A GoFundMe page has been set up to help cover the medical bills of an injured Monterey Park police dog.
Three-year-old Robin and her handler, Agent Palomino, were chasing two burglary suspects Saturday.
The Belgian Malinois found one of the men, who was taken into custody.
When she went into steep terrain to look for the second suspect, Robin was stung nearly 100 times.
She was rushed to a veterinary emergency room but went into anaphylactic shock and had to undergo an emergency blood transfusion, according to the Monterey Park Police Officer's Association.
Tests show Robin's liver and lungs have severe damage, and she remained in critical condition Tuesday night.
"It's pretty significant. She's lucky to be alive," Jeffrey Patlogar, of Inland Valley Emergency Pet Clinic, said.
Doctors say it could take several weeks before Robin is well enough to return to work.
Police say Robin is one of three police dogs in Monterey Park and she has only been with the force a few months.
"Our hopes and prayers are that that she has a full and speedy recovery and that she continues the improvement that we're starting to see," police chief Jim Smith said.
Robin's handler was also stung by bees but is doing fine.
The suspects they were chasing were arrested.
