From Wentz He Came: Rams Fans Rejoice In Team's Picking Of Jared Goff

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com)  —  Thousands of Rams fans made it something like a party Thursday even though if the honored guest was thousands of miles away.

The fans gathered at LA Live to watch the Rams make their first round number one pick -- quarterback Jared Goff.

CBS2's Peter Daut reported from the crowd -- a private event -- where some fans told him they started gathering around 6 a.m. for the announcement being made nearly 12 hours later.

Fans and football experts  alike expected Goff -- a California product -- to be the pick. There was also slight speculation the Rams could go after North Dakota native Carson Wentz.

Daut said it was somewhat anticlimactic when Goff's name was officially read because speculation had been running so high in his favor. He was born in Novato, California and was a standout in college at California.

Many Rams players also came to the event to herald their new teammate even if he was in Chicago.

Fans told Daut they were excited by the choice of Goff. But since this is the first time NFL football has been in Los Angeles in two decades, the fans would likely have been happy about any pick.

Still, several fans told Daut that Goff was exactly what the Rams needed.

"I think it's a good pick, a very safe pick. I think he's got some good upside. The Rams did a smart move here," said one fan.

The event was expected to last until about 9 p.m.
