From Pursuits To PIT Maneuvers, LAPD Offers Glimpse Into Training Of A Recruit

GRANADA HILLS (CBSLA.com) – The LAPD's training academy opened its doors Monday to members of the media and offered a one-day, crash-course illustrating some of the same skills cadets learn.

CBS2/KCAL9's Rachel Kim and others participating in the academy experience in Granada Hills gained insight into pursuits and use-of-force policies. Part of the experience included a mock chase.

"This is not a race course for us or racing school. We teach that at times when you have to get there quickly, but you have to do it safely," said Officer Tony Adler, an LAPD instructor. "It's more or less about 7 percent of all the pursuits would end in a PIT."

As Kim reports, recruits must also learn when the use of deadly force is justified.

From revolvers to semiautomatic weapons to ammunition, Kim also received a lesson in what LAPD officers use in different scenarios.

Classroom discussions on subjects like constitutional policing and ensuring that recruits understand amendments like the 4th are also included in the academy.
