Friends Mark Somber Anniversary Of Fatal Shooting Of Discount Store Clerk

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) —Friends held an evening of prayers and remembrances for a store clerk who was fatally shot during a robbery a year ago Wednesday.

The shooting took place at Happy Bargain 99 Cents Store in the 7400 block of South Broadway. Martha Sanchez, a 39-year-old mother of five, was shot multiple times in the torso.

KCAL9's Juan Fernandez spoke to friends about their loss.

Sanchez, whose children ranged in age from 3 to 18, had been working at the business about year.

"A loving person, a good person," said friend David Ponce.

Police arrested the man they believe shot and robbed Sanchez about two months after the crime left her family devastated.

The suspect, a known gang member, lived about a quarter-mile way, authorities said.

The fact that man suspected in the shooting lived so close still gives Sanchez' friends pause.

Friends told Fernandez they planned to come out for each of the next seven nights and pray for the friend they lost. They also planned to light candles and leave flowers in her memory.
