Former UCLA Freshman Water Polo Player Indicted For Forcible Rape Involving 3 Victims

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — A former UCLA freshman water polo player pleaded not guilty Monday on charges of forcible rape involving three victims, District Attorney's Office officials said.

An eight-count indictment was unsealed Monday against Hakop Jack Kaplanyan, 19, charging him with a felony count each of forcible rape; false imprisonment by violence; possession of matter depicting a minor engaging in sexual conduct; and a misdemeanor count of sexual battery by restraint.

Kaplanyan, who was arrested Friday, also faces two felony counts each of sexual penetration by a foreign object and assault with intent to commit rape. The charges involve three victims of sexual assaults between Oct. 1, 2012 and April 2, 2013.

The star water polo player was arrested on April 2, 2013 after a female student reported being raped at his residence hall and reportedly involved a female friend.

Kaplanyan, who graduated from Hoover High School in Glendale, played the "attacker" position, according to UCLA's water polo roster. He was redshirted during the 2012 season.

He previously posted $200,000 bail after his arrest last year. Kaplanyan was recently arrested again, but freed Monday evening after posting a $590,000 bond..

Kaplanyan's pre-trial hearing is scheduled for April 29.

If convicted of all the charges, he faces 37 years and four months in state prison.
