Heavy Rain Floods 710 Freeway In Compton; Hail Falls In Sun Valley And Power Outages Crop Up In West Valley

COMPTON (CBSLA) – The first day of spring brought heavy rain and hailstorms to the Southland Wednesday.

Around 2 p.m., rain clouds hovered over the 710 Freeway at the Long Beach exit, flooding the road.

Vehicles on the 710 Freeway, right under the 91 Freeway, struggled to get through several inches of water.

The 710 Freeway north and southbound lanes were closed and traffic was diverted to the 91 Freeway, but have since reopened.

In Long Beach, a toppled tree crushed a car. No one was inside the vehicle at the time.

The owner was just feet away inside a home.

"I heard a big 'Boom!' I thought somebody was racing, going to the park and hit a car," the woman said.

Side streets like Santa Fe and Del Amo Boulevards were also backed up with vehicles that were caught in the storm.

Hail, lightning and even snow hit the Carson/Compton area, but the storm was contained to only a couple miles.

Caltrans crews were in the area helping and making sure nobody was in need of rescue.

No injuries were reported.

The unstable air and strange weather patterns had the entire area covered in white hail.

A major power outage was reported in the Canoga Park area possibly due to lightning striking a power pole at Saticoy St. and De Soto Ave. according to police.

Multiple traffic lights in the area were down.

The flood advisory over the Compton area has since expired but strange weather continues to spread throughout the Southland.

CBS2 reports that the unstable air moving in is bringing thunderstorms that can be expected to go into the evening.
