Float Company Bars Volunteers From Using Mobile Phones While Decorating

IRWINDALE (CBSLA.com) – No texting or talking on the phone while decorating. Volunteers, who decorate some of the Rose Parade floats, are not allowed to use their mobile phones for safety reasons.

Fiesta Parade Floats, the company that is building 10 floats for the parade, is strictly enforcing the rule after an accident involving a volunteer.

"Unfortunately, one little girl was deciding to text and she kind of slipped and fell a bit. She was fine. But it was a great reminder to her as well as everybody else that you've got to follow our safety rules," said Tim Estes, President of Fiesta Parade Floats. The girl was not hurt.

Savannah Swan is a troop leader and made sure her girls didn't have an accident too.

"I stressed that this is about making beautiful pieces of artwork. And it's not about texting your friends or calling or anything like that," Swan said.

With the rules in place and everyone working until the last minute, many say not being able to use their cell phone while working makes them work even harder.

Vincent Hong, 14, was too busy to stop working even during an interview with CBS2/KCAL9's Brittney Hopper.

"It takes a lot of preparation. And you have to focus a lot when doing your job," Hong said.

All this hard work and focus have paid off. Fiesta said all of the floats will be ready on New Year's Day.
