LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — When a shark bites a swimmer or takes a chunk out of a surfboard anywhere near the California coast, it usually makes news.

But sharks are spotted only occasionally, and bites are rare.  Here are five surprising facts about sharks from National Geographic:

  1. 93% of shark victims are males.
  2. In California, more people have been bitten (or killed) by sharks than struck by lightning in the last 55 years.
  3. Your chance of being killed by a shark are 1 in 3,700,00
  4. Worldwide, about five people are killed each year by sharks.
  5. For every human killed by a shark, humans kill about two million sharks.
