Fire-Resistant Vegetation, Aerial Attack Credited With Slowing Brea Fire
BREA (CBSLA.com) — A homeowners association and an aerial attack received credit Wednesday for putting the brakes on a wind-driven fire in Brea.
KNX1070's Mike Landa reports the fire broke out along the 57 Freeway, shutting down southbound traffic at Tonner Canyon Road.
Orange County Fire Authority Captain Steve Concialdi says the fire was restricted to about two acres thanks to quick aerial response.
"Fortunately our helicopter was up, was able to get there quickly and made some significant drops on the fire, keeping the fire in check," Concialdi said.
Also getting credit is a homeowners association that created a fire suppression zone by clearing away brush and planting fire-resistant vegetation that slowed down wind-driven flames.
"It allows our ground forces with hose lines to get between the homes and knock the fire down and it gives our guys a fighting chance to save homes," Concialdi said.
