IRVINE (CBSLA.com) — An electrical fire at an Edison substation in Irvine knocked out power for thousands of customers Thursday.

SKY9's Stu Mundel reports 26,000 were initially reported to have lost power; however, that number had lowered to about 8,600 by 10 p.m.

Officials believe a piece of equipment failed and caught fire at the facility, located near Barranca Parkway and Sand Canyon Avenue.

Crews are on the scene trying to fix the issue on one of the hottest days of the year so far.

It was not immediately clear when power would be fully restored.
