Feds Offer California $2M To Repair Collapsed Interstate 10 Bridge

DESERT CENTER (AP) — The federal government is offering California $2 million in emergency funds to repair an interstate bridge over a desert gully that was knocked down by flash-flood waters.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx announced the availability of the emergency money on Thursday.

California's Department of Transportation plans a limited reopening Friday of the Interstate 10 bridge over Tex Wash, about 50 miles west of the California-Arizona line.

Traffic will share the two lanes on bridge's the westbound span. Sunday's flood waters eroded soil supporting the eastbound span and those repairs will take longer.

The agency arranged an emergency contract with a private construction firm to shore up the bridge. It has not provided an estimate of repair costs.
