Family Member Saves Baby From Drowning At La Palma Home
LA PALMA (CBSLA.com) — A year-old girl who fell in the pool of her La Palma home was saved from drowning by a family member, authorities said Wednesday.
KNX 1070's Megan Goldsby reports the girls' family members were gathered at the front of a residence in the 7300 block of Dallas Drive around 6:45 p.m. Tuesday when they noticed that the baby was missing.
A family member found the baby floating at the bottom of a backyard pool and began administering CPR, Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Steve Concialdi said.
"They jumped in, she was pulled out, they immediately started CPR," said Concialdi. The child was hospitalized in serious condition.
By the time paramedics arrived on the scene, the girl was breathing, according to Concialdi. A gate to the swimming pool had had been left open at the home, Concialdi said.
"This little 12-month-old, she's just learning how to walk, she wants a little freedom, and she's going straight for that pool," he said. "This could've been a tragic outcome, but it wasn't because they knew CPR."
According to Concialdi, not only should every residential pool have a gated area, but homeowners should install sensors that go off when something hits the water.
Of the 60 drowning-type incidents in Orange County this year, 24 of them were fatal, Concialdi said.
