Family Keeps Dad's Spirit Alive In Volleyball Tournament With Lots Of Heart

MANHATTAN BEACH (CBSLA.com) —  It's not just the great food that keeps people coming back to Four Daughters Kitchen in the South Bay.

It's a well-known restaurant that is often busy and if you're coming for brunch, expect to wait. The food -- breakfast, lunch or dinner -- is a stand out, but so is the family behind the eatery.

Kori Clausen now runs the business ever since her husband, Clint, died of a heart attack in August 2014.

Clint was only 44.

He and Kori named the restaurant (3505 Highland Avenue Manhattan Beach 90266)  for their four daughters, namely Haley, Layla, Sophia and Sloan.

Suddenly, the girls found themselves without a father.

"I couldn't believe that I was actually someone who it would happen to me," says 9-year-old Sophia.

"It's just hard. It's our rock, that's gone," says Kori.

Instead of giving up, the said the plan was to give back instead.

On Saturday, the ladies are putting on the 2nd Annual Clint Clausen Four Daughters Kitchen Volleyball Tournament.

Money raised will help pay for the girls' college funds as well as to subsidize screenings for other so other people might detect heart problems they didn't know they had.

Clint didn't get a screening in time.

"We said when we were 40, we were going to get this done, 40 came and went," says Kori."I was kicking myself. I had the opportunity to have a heart screening. I couldn't believe how thorough it was, how good it was, how informative it is and it's right in our back yard."

Most of all, the family wants to raise awareness. The daughters don't want any other kids to go through what they have endured -- the sudden loss of a parent.

KCAL9's Erica Nochlin reports the Clausen family has partnered with a local medical center as well as the American Heart Association.

It costs a team of four $160 to play in the tournament and it kicks off at 8 a.m. Saturday.
