Investigation underway after F/A-18 fighter jet crashes at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar

F/A-18 fighter jet crash reported near San Diego

Officials are searching for a missing pilot after a military jet crashed on the Marine Corps Air Station in Miramar near San Diego.

The crash involving a F/A-18 Hornet fighter jet happened around 11:54 p.m. on Thursday, the base said in a news release on Facebook.

The aircraft was not part of 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, but was operating out of MCAS Miramar. The crash site is on government property east of the air station and there are no indications of damage to property on the ground. 

Search and rescue actions are ongoing and an investigation is underway. We will provide more information as it becomes available.

MCAS Miramar houses over 12,000 Marines, sailors and civilians. The base is about 10 miles north of San Diego. 

The F/A-18 is a multirole combat aircraft flown by the Marine Corps, the U.S. Navy and several other nations, the Associated Press reported.
