Ex-Councilman Richard Alarcon Convicted Of Voter Fraud, Perjury Avoids Jail Time
LOS ANGELES (AP) — A former Los Angeles City Councilman convicted of voter fraud and perjury has avoided jail time.
The Los Angeles Daily News says Richard Alarcon showed up at county jail in downtown Los Angeles on Friday to begin serving a 120-day sentence but instead, he was fitted with an electronic monitor and sent home.

Sheriff's spokeswoman Nicole Nishida says Alarcon will remain under house arrest and must wear the device for 51 days.
The newspaper says Alarcon declined to comment.
Alarcon and his wife, Flora, were convicted in July of living outside the district he was elected to represent. He represented the 7th Council District, including poorer areas of the San Fernando Valley, from 1993 to 1998 and again from 2007 to 2013.
