Emotional Memorial Held In Downtown LA To Honor Fallen LAPD Officers
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Hundreds of people gathered at a memorial ceremony on Thursday to pay tribute to LAPD officers killed in the line of duty.
The annual memorial currently in its 25th year was held in downtown Los Angeles and was attended by city officials, community members, and loved ones who wore a photograph of the fallen on their chest.
"It is good that these folks are all remembered but it's a little difficult because you revisit a really terrible time," said one man, who choked back tears while talking about his sister, the late-Christy Hamilton.
Hamilton was killed in 1994 by a 17-year-old who had shot his father at the age of 45. She had graduated from the Police Academy on a Friday and died three days later.
The day was bittersweet for many families who said it was day they wouldn't have missed.
The program also featured the traditional "roll call" of fallen heroes and a 21-gun salute.
