Electrical vault explosion causes DTLA power outages

Vault explosion knocks out power to downtown area

An explosion caused extensive damage to electrical vaults in downtown Los Angeles early Monday morning.

3rd Street was closed between Omar St. and Central Ave.

About 4:40 a.m., the L.A. Fire Dept. got a report of a large explosion and a power outage. Three maintenance hole covers in the street were blown off and debris was laying in the street.

Approximately 500 Los Angeles Dept. of Water and Power customers in the area experienced power outages

Power was likely to remain offline until about 9 a.m.

No further details about the explosion were immediately released.
