Man Killed, Woman Injured In Redondo Beach Bus Accident

REDONDO BEACH (CBSLA.com) — A couple in their 70s was struck by a bus in Redondo Beach on Wednesday evening, killing the man and seriously injuring the woman.

Authorities said the couple was walking near South Catalina Avenue and Avenue I around 6:30 p.m., according to the Redondo Beach Police Department.

The bus hit the couple as they attempted to cross the 1700 block of South Catalina Avenue.

Officials expected streets in both directions to be closed for hours as they conducted an investigation.

No one else was injured.

"We're still trying to determine the identities. We don't know if they were married or not, but they were an elderly couple and walking together," said Sgt. Shawn Freeman, public information officer for the Los Angeles Department of Transportation, which operates the bus.

The man was declared dead at the scene. The woman is in a hospital with serious injuries.

Authorities said alcohol and drugs were ruled out in the crash, calling it "a tragic accident."
