El Segundo Scouts Raise Funds For Flood Victim's Family

EL SEGUNDO (CBSLA.com) — Members of Boy Scout Troop 762 spent their Saturday holding a car wash to raise funds for the family of a Scout whose father died in the flash flooding at Mount Baldy earlier this month.

Joo Hwan Lee, who volunteered with the troop, taking boys on hikes, had been hiking alone in Mount Baldy Village on Aug. 3 when floodwaters swept away his car. He was found the next day.

On Saturday, CBS2's Joy Benedict found many youngsters who got a lesson in life they were too young to learn.

"Mr. Lee was a big part of the troop," said Boy Scout Marc Catzalco. "When he died it was so tragic we needed to do something to help their family."

"He gave a lot to Scouting so we thought Scouting should give some to him," Marc added.

"I think it's important that when things are tough people have things to fall back on," said Eagle Scout Malcolm Au

"We were trying to find out ways to raise money for the Lee family, and since we do car washes a lot we thought we should do a car was for them," Marc said.

While the car wash was free, Scouts were asking for donations for the Lee family. And the community responded.

"One thing we're finding is people are just stopping by and dropping off money without even getting their car washed, said Scoutmaster Julio Catzalco.

The Scouts are also doing the best to help their friend through a tough time.

"We're just trying to keep him laughing, keep him having fun," Marc said.
