El Monte Police Fatally Shoot Man Near 10 Freeway

EL MONTE (CBSLA) — Officers with the El Monte Police Department fatally shot a man Monday afternoon, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said.

According to LASD, the shooting happened at about 1:55 p.m. near the corner of Durfee and Garvey avenues following a report of a robbery from a nearby store.

When officers arrived on the scene, they saw a man matching the description of the alleged thief and attempted to make contact when the man ran eastbound onto the off-ramp of Durfee Avenue, according to LASD.

The officer then caught up with the suspect and a fight ensued. A second officer arrived to help the first officer. The shooting happened during the physical altercation, according to LASD.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene, though no officers were injured.

LASD was handling the investigation.
