Echo Park Woman To Be Arraigned In 11-Year-Old Son's Death

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — An Echo Park woman whose 11-year-old son was found dead inside a closet will be arraigned on murder and child abuse charges Thursday.

According to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office, Veronica Aguilar, 39, has been charged with one count each of murder and child abuse resulting in death involving her son, Yonatan Daniel Aguilar.

On Aug. 22, Yonatan was found wrapped in a blanket in a closet at their home located in the 2100 block of Santa Ynez Street, according to police.

The boy's stepfather, Jose Pinzon, said Aguilar told him that her son was dead before he found the body and called 911.

The boy allegedly died due to neglect and showed severe signs of malnutrition, according to prosecutors.

Aguilar was arrested the day after her son's body was discovered.

During her first court appearance in August, she was ordered to remain jailed in lieu of $2 million bail.

If convicted as charged, Aguilar could face up to 15 years to life in state prison.

The arraignment is scheduled after 8:30 a.m. in downtown Los Angeles.
