Drought Conditions Force Closure Of Castaic Lake Swim Beaches

CASTAIC (CBSLA.com) — Castaic Lake will not be open for swimming this summer due to low water levels, Los Angeles County officials said.

Drought conditions have forced the Department of Parks and Recreation to declare conditions unsafe, particularly for those who are not strong swimmers.

Swim beaches are usually open Thursday to Sunday from the last week of May through Sept. 1.

"Castaic Lake remains a wonderful place to visit, with a variety of options for fun, healthy recreation - but the state drought emergency is affecting many aspects of life in California, and we will not compromise on matters of safety," Director Russ Guiney said.

Kayaking, float tube fishing and stand-up paddle will be available as usual, however, in the event that water levels continue to fall, those and other activities like boating, may be negatively affected, Guiney added.
