Drone Forces Firefighters To Temporarily Suspend Aerial Assaults Over Sand Fire

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — An unauthorized drone forced firefighters to suspend an aerial attack over a massive wildfire that has destroyed at least 18 homes.

Jay Nichols, a Forest Service spokesperson, said an unmanned aerial vehicle was spotted in the Bear Divide area of the Angeles National Forest.

The discovery prompted fire officials to suspend aerial assaults for a mandatory period of 30 minutes.

Nichols said firefighting operations have since resumed.

According to a fire official on-scene, one person has been detained in connection with the drone incident.

The so-called Sand fire has blackened more than 34-square-miles of brush since it erupted Friday near Santa Clarita and the Angeles National Forest.
