Drivers Deal With Cold, Wet Weather On Grapevine

LEBEC (CBSLA.com) — A mixture of rain -- and possibly a wintry mix of sleet and snow -- was expected to make for a difficult drive on the Grapevine late on Christmas Eve and early Christmas Day.

In Lebec, rain began falling on and off at about 6:30 p.m., and the temperature dipped to 36 degrees at around 9 p.m.

"The freeway is a nightmare up here during Christmas," said one driver, Jacob Patton.

Truck driver Manny Ramirez said everyone should keep a safe distance from other cars.

"That way if you have to slam on your brakes you have some cushion," he said.

Even if the Grapevine can be stressful, it still has its charms, Patton said.

"When you're up here, it's beautiful," he said.

At around 11 p.m. CBS2's Josh Rubenstein reported that CHP was putting in place traffic breaks on parts of the Grapevine due to snow and ice.
