Driver Killed In Suspected Street-Racing Crash On Empty San Bernardino School Campus

SAN BERNARDINO (AP) — San Bernardino police are investigating whether a driver killed in a violent single-car crash on an elementary school campus was participating in an illegal street race.

Lt. Rich Lawhead says the silver Honda Accord was speeding up to 80 mph when it took out a street light and was nearly sheared in half Monday afternoon. The car came to rest in the student pick-up lane at E. Neal Roberts Elementary School.

The driver, who died at the scene, has not been identified.

Lawhead says several witnesses reported the Honda driver was racing another car and weaving in and out of traffic. But other witnesses say he was a lone driver acting recklessly.

No students were on campus because they're off for spring break.
