The Mercedes-Benz SUV crashed around 2:30 a.m. on La Cienega Boulevard near Gregory Way, Beverly Hills police report.

The driver was headed southbound and investigators suspect, based on the impact, that he was traveling faster than the posted 35-mph speed limit.

Witnesses arrived immediately after the crash but were unable to help the driver because of the flames.

The unidentified man died at the scene. Police say no one else was in the vehicle.

"The officers and investigators had to do a laser scan of the entire scene of the accident, and for their safety we need to keep...both directions of traffic closed," Long Beach Police Lt. Mike Foxen said.

La Cienega was closed between Wilshire and Olympic boulevards until 8 a.m., causing a traffic jam for morning commuters.
